Little Free Library

The structure outside Barbara Hinske's downtown Phoenix home looks like a fancy birdhouse. But instead of being littered with bird seed, it's brimming with books.
Dubbed Hinske Hall, it's one of a growing number of Little Free Libraries decorating dozens of front lawns, storefronts and parks around Arizona, connecting to an international movement that encourages neighborhoods to share books.
Little Free Libraries can look like houses, animals or any other object that can hold and protect books from the elements. Hinske's is a mini-mansion with a granite exterior, marble front door and a little window with a dog looking out.
Anyone can visit Hinske's Little Free library, she said. The concept is simple: Take a book, leave a book.
The first Little Free Library was built in 2009 in Wisconsin, according to littlefreelibrary.org. Since then, Little Free Libraries have graced front yards in Honduras, Uganda, Pakistan and elsewhere.

I just fell in love with them and decided I would do a weekly "uplifting" posting one at a time. I hope they inspire you as they have me. Can you imagine inheriting a Bible with drawings like these.

I enjoyed reading this blog this morning about her bringing in a hitch-hiker but I recently had some that were very un-plesant!


BEDBUGS!!!

I noticed I had these bites but they didn't itch...

Then I noticed after I washed our sheets there were these blood stains all over and while showing this to my hubby I looked up to a drape that hangs over our bed and that's when I saw them!!!!

 

Then we looked on the matress

Fortunate for us we were able to sleep in a spare bedroom taking precaution to not bring any clothing and washing our pillows in hot water.

 

Trust me by the time you realize you have them you have a infestation.

Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime.
Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year.

Although they are a nuisance, they do not transmit diseases.

They are very easy to get if you travel or are out and about a lot and although I knew that, I had become lax in precautions and I guess this is the result.

Here is my advice..
Never bring your luggage in your bedroom. Never bring your nightgown/robe from a trip into your bedroom without washing it after a trip. If you think you may have been subjected to them remove your clothing and put them in a hot drier for 20 min. and then they will be fine.

If you get them, don't mess with it, call the professionals and have them treat your home, It is EXPENSIVE so be sure to use a company that warranties their work.

Silver sneakers update

I posted about the Silver sneakers group I joined here

Thought I would give an update. We got a new instructor and he in not so low keyed, in fact he works us pretty good so I have no need to "move up" to a more intensive class. These classes are offered in many adult centers all over the USA and is sponsored by many insurance plans. It is very nice to go to a exercise group that is mostly people around my age. Maybe you would like to try one out too.

 

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis

 

I just finished listening to this book and must say, I learned a lot. There have been many pictures of her in so many different settings and from the time she was very young...

 she was striking.

 

Her whole life she was surrounded by womanizers including her father.

 

I won't give away many of the things that surprised me in the book but simply say that things are not always the way we assume, including her reasons for marrying J.F.K.

 

 

I understood that she desperately wanted to avoid the press but always thought it was because of  her children, there was a lot more to it than that.

 

She made us proud how she stood by her husband in great sadness..

 but we have no idea how alone she was with it all.

 

 

It was hard to understand why she married Onassis but this book shined some light on that as well.

 

I am so glad she didn't live to see her precious John, John die and recently heard a rumor that the plane crash was suspicious due to the result of him seriously considering running for President. After listening to the book, one might wonder.

 

In all the pictures taken of her only few are without her broad smile..

 How easy it was to assume she was happy...

 

 even when dying of cancer.

I LOVE cookbooks

Maybe you don't think that is unusual but if you were to understand that I RARELY cook, you may think it a bit strange. Howerever, nothing makes me happier than to sit down with a cookbook and figure out what I might like. I have tried to curtail my puchasing but this is my stash at the moment.....

It didn't say how old this book was so I was a bit surprised and confused when the recipes read like this.............................

 

Do you you see how she is refering to a "Menu-ette skillet"? Do you know what that is? Well, I didn't so had to go to google and guess what it is?

Did you also notice that she leaves a blank space on each recipe? That is so you can fill in how much time is needed for your kind of microwave. She was cooking on a 700 watt one which is pretty outdated now. Still it has some good sounding recipes.....................

Little Tony had been playing outside with the other kids for a while when he came into the house

and asked, 'Grandma, what's that called when two people sleep in the same room and one is on top of the other?'

She was a little taken aback, but she decided to just tell him the truth. 'It's called sexual intercourse, darling'

Little Tony just said, 'Oh, OK,' and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, 'Grandma, it isn't called sexual intercourse. It's called Bunk Beds. And Jimmy's mom wants to talk to you.

Anniversary

Yesterday was.....

 

If you have followed my blog you know that back in Feb. hubby got a concussion from a fall and we are still dealing with some after effects of that. Not being able to sleep and feeling anxious about things. We talked about taking a anniversary trip and he suggested Mexico so I checked out  Cancun since it is a place we haven't been and he said he didn't feel comfortable about that so I checked out a couple of road trips here in the states and he said no but maybe we could go back to Mazatlan, Mexico where we have been before so I booked a trip there. Early this week he had a bad dizzy spell and asked me to cancel the trip so I did. I asked if he wanted to go to a casino (something he normally enjoys) and have and nice dinner and spend the night and he said yes. So I booked a night at the Talking Stick Casino and as soon as we walked in I knew he wasn't comfortable. We had a couple of drinks played a penny machine for just a little while and it was time for our dinner reservation. The first time we tried to go here we couldn't get in because we did not have reservations so I was excited to see it............well, it wasn't exactly breathtaking. I did step out and take a couple of pictures...

This is one of those resturants that you have to order and pay for everything seperate so we shared a salad and hubby had scallops and I had crab, but it was already all cracked and soaking in a butter sauce.......

It was delecious!

 

They presented us with the sweet desert above and hubby leaned over and said..."I think we should go home" We went up and got our things and checked out...so am I upset????

Not as long as I still have him with his arm around me!

This is what President Roosevelt wrote in his diary on Feb. 14, 1884

and here is why.......


On this day in 1884, future President Theodore Roosevelt’s wife and mother die, only hours apart.
Roosevelt was at work in the New York state legislature attempting to get a government reform bill passed when he was summoned home by his family. He returned home to find his mother, Mittie, had succumbed to typhoid fever. On the same day, his wife of four years, Alice Lee, died of Bright’s disease, a severe kidney ailment. Only two days before her death, Alice Lee had given birth to the couple’s daughter, Alice.

 

 

 The double tragedy devastated Roosevelt. He ordered those around him not to mention his wife’s name. Burdened by grief, he abandoned politics, left the infant Alice with his sister Bamie, and, at the end of 1884, struck out for the Dakota territories, where he lived as a rancher and worked as a sheriff for two years. When not engrossed in raising cattle or acting as the local lawman, Roosevelt found time to indulge his passion for reading and writing history. After a blizzard wiped out his prized herd of cattle in 1885, Roosevelt decided to return to eastern society. Once back in New York in 1886, he again took up politics and took over raising his precocious daughter, Alice, who later became a national celebrity.

A most unusual church

Chapel of the Holy Cross

A special use permit was required and this chapel was built in 1956 in 18 months and at the cost of $300,000.

 

 

 

 

The American Institute of Architects gave the Chapel its Award of Honor in 1957

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 2007, Arizonans voted the Chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona

 

 

 

 

 

 

In the sculptor's words, “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men (and women) and be a living reality.”

Of course it isn't really a light but  type of chemical reaction called bioluminescence.

 

Did you know?

In the resort town of Skagen you can watch an amazing natural phenomenon. This city is the northernmost point of Denmark, where the Baltic and North Seas meet. 

The two opposing tides in this place can not merge because they have different densities.

 

 And here I thought water was just water!
